KPOP DICTIONARY: SAY KIMCHI!

You might here “kimchi” when koreans taking pictures in korean drama, or when kpop stars update their own photos(a.k.a Selca) on the internet. I bet you know Kimchi is one of the most popular Korean foon, which is;

this!

Yes, you are right.

Kimchi is Korean traditional fermented dish made of Chinese cabbages with a lot of seasonings. Because it is fermented and with lot of good ingredients in it, it is popular with its healthiness. Almost every Koreans eat kimchi for every single meal as side dish. Sometimes, Koreans cook the main dish with kimch, such as Kimchi stir-fried rice, kimchi stew and etc.

Anyway, Koreans say “Kimchi~” when they are taking pictures pretty much. In English, photographers usually say “Say cheese” to make people to smile in pictures. In Korea, when photographers count 1,2,3 or 3 to 1, photographees say “kimchi” by themselves. As the pronunciation of “cheese” makes person’s mouth to smile, which of “Kimchi” also makes person to smile.

Pronunciate it with me! Kim-ch’i-
You should prolong the pronuncation of ‘-chi’ as ‘cheee’.

And Koreans usually make ‘V’ sign with their two fingers (thumb and forfinger) when they say “kimchi” while taking pictures. To tell the truth, making ‘v’ sign and say ‘kimchi’ are not relevant at all, but, people do it together generally.

And as you know, many kpop stars make ‘kimchi’ pose, so you might know about it!

    If I only had a nickel for every time I've confused my thumb with my middle finger... You know, the last time I gave a performance two thumbs up, I was beaten within an inch of my life. Glad to see I'm not alone in my affliction.
